How to handle money in Playa del Carmen

Figuring out how to handle money in Playa del Carmen in your first few weeks saves time, avoids unnecessary fees, and means you are not scrambling every time a restaurant is cash-only. The setup is straightforward once you understand how it works here.

Cash vs card in Playa del Carmen

You need both. Card acceptance has improved significantly in recent years. Most restaurants, supermarkets, and larger businesses accept Visa and Mastercard without issues. But a meaningful number of places, particularly markets, smaller local restaurants, laundry services, and taxis, are cash-only.

Keep around 1,000 to 2,000 pesos in cash at any time for the first few weeks until you have a clearer sense of how you actually spend.

ATMs and getting cash

Use ATMs inside bank branches rather than standalone machines in convenience stores or tourist areas. The rates are better and the security risk is lower. BBVA, Santander, and Banamex are the most common and generally reliable.

Most ATMs charge a withdrawal fee of 50 to 100 pesos. Some international bank cards reimburse foreign ATM fees. Check with your home bank before you arrive. If you are withdrawing regularly, taking out larger amounts less often is cheaper than frequent small withdrawals.

Watch out for dynamic currency conversion

Some ATMs and card terminals will offer to charge you in your home currency instead of pesos. Always choose pesos. The exchange rate offered for your home currency is significantly worse. This catches a lot of people out in the first week.

Opening a Mexican bank account

Not essential in month one, but worth doing if you are staying longer than 90 days. BBVA and Banorte are the most community-recommended options. You will need your passport, a local address, and patience. The process can take one to two hours in-branch.

Having a local account eliminates ATM fees, makes paying rent easier, and simplifies any local contracts you need to sign. Prioritize it for month two.

Tipping

Tipping is standard and expected in restaurants, at hotels, and for any service work. The standard is 10 to 15 percent in restaurants. Rounding up or leaving 20 pesos for small services is the norm.

Paying rent

Many landlords still prefer cash. Some accept bank transfer. Confirm the method before you sign. Cash transactions for large amounts should always be accompanied by a written receipt.

Markets and local shops

Cash only in most cases. Keep small bills. Vendors often cannot break a 500-peso note for a 40-peso purchase.

Common money mistakes when moving to Playa del Carmen

  • Accepting dynamic currency conversion at ATMs or card terminals
  • Using standalone ATMs in tourist areas with higher fees and higher risk
  • Arriving without any cash and struggling to pay for a taxi from the airport
  • Waiting until month three to open a local bank account

Learning how to handle money in Playa del Carmen takes about two weeks of paying attention. After that, it becomes routine.
