Getting a Local SIM Card in Playa del Carmen

Which network to pick, where to buy, how much data you need, and what to do when things go wrong. The practical guide for new arrivals.

The short answer

Getting a SIM card in Playa del Carmen is one of the first things to sort after landing. Get Telcel. Pick it up at the airport for zero hassle on arrival, or at any OXXO once you’re settled. A 10GB plan costs around 200–250 pesos and lasts 30 days.

That’s it. Everything below is context.

Best SIM Card for Playa del Carmen: Telcel vs AT&T

Both work in Playa del Carmen. The difference matters once you leave the city.

Telcel is Mexico’s largest carrier. Coverage is better across the country — smaller towns, highway routes, and the Yucatan peninsula outside tourist zones. If you’re renting a car, taking day trips, or planning to travel around Mexico, Telcel is the right choice.

AT&T Mexico has solid coverage within Playa, Tulum, and Cancun. Their app is slightly cleaner and plans are comparable in price. Some people find the customer service better. Coverage gaps outside major cities are more noticeable.

Community recommendation

Telcel, especially if you’re new to Mexico and still working out your movements. You can always switch later.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Playa del Carmen

At the airport

Cancun International (CUN) has Telcel and AT&T counters in the arrivals hall. Prices are slightly higher than in town but the convenience is real. If you land late, tired, and need data immediately, this is the right call.

Expect to pay around 300–350 pesos for a starter plan at the airport. Staff are used to helping foreigners and the process is fast.

At any OXXO

OXXO convenience stores sell Telcel SIM cards and top-up cards (fichas de recarga). There’s an OXXO within walking distance of almost anywhere in Centro and Zazil-Ha.

The SIM itself is usually 30–50 pesos. Activation is done by calling a number from the SIM or via the Telcel website. Some OXXO staff will help with activation, some won’t. Bring patience.

At an official Telcel store

There’s a Telcel store on Quinta Avenida and another near Walmart Playa. Staff here are better equipped for activation, troubleshooting, and plan selection. Queues move slowly. Go in the morning.

If you have any issues with your SIM, this is the place to resolve them.

What to expect at the store

The process takes 10–15 minutes at an official store, less at the airport. You’ll need:

  • Your passport
  • Cash (most stores prefer it, though cards are accepted)
  • Your unlocked phone

Staff will put the SIM in for you, activate it, and confirm data is working before you leave. At OXXO, activation is usually self-service via a code on the packaging.

How much data do you actually need?

10GB/month is enough if you’re mostly on WiFi at coworking spaces, cafes, or your apartment and use data for maps and messaging when you’re out.

20GB+ if you’re streaming, on video calls away from WiFi, or your accommodation has unreliable internet.

Most Telcel plans are 30-day cycles. You can top up before the cycle ends without losing your number. Plans start around 150 pesos for 5GB and go up to 500+ pesos for unlimited-style plans.

Start small

Get 10GB first. You can top up immediately if you run out. Better to understand your actual usage before committing to a bigger plan.

If your phone is locked

Your phone needs to be unlocked to use a Mexican SIM. Most phones bought in the last three to four years are unlocked by default. Check with your carrier if you’re not sure.

If it’s locked, contact your home carrier to unlock it before you travel. Some do this for free once your contract ends. Others charge a fee. Do this before you leave — it’s much harder to sort from abroad.

Topping up

Topping up is called recargar. You can do it three ways:

  • At any OXXO — tell the cashier “una recarga de Telcel por favor” and give them your number and the amount you want to add
  • Via the Mi Telcel app — worth downloading once you’re set up
  • Online at telcel.com — works with most international cards

Keep a note of your cycle renewal date. Telcel will text you when you’re running low on data.

Common issues

SIM shows as unregistered after purchase

Go back to the store or call Telcel customer service. This happens occasionally and is always fixable. Don’t panic.

Data works but calls don’t

Your plan may be data-only. Most people in the community use WhatsApp for calls anyway, so this rarely matters in practice.

Coverage drops indoors

Common in buildings with thick concrete walls. A Mexico-wide thing, not specific to your carrier.

Your number goes inactive

If your SIM sits unused for 60–90 days without a top-up, the number can be recycled by the carrier. Top up at least once every 60 days to keep it active. The Mi Telcel app sends reminders.
